Hebrews 12:6,11 – For the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes those he accepts as his children. No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening — it is painful! But afterward there will be a quiet harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way. (NLT)
We love pancakes in our house. Along with bacon and eggs, they have always been a Sunday morning treat.
One day as I was flipping pancakes, I thought about our lives. Often we are on the "hot griddle" of life. God is looking down tenderly on us to see how we are doing. The "bubbles" of anger, resentment, pride, bitterness, and hurt come up to the surface and pop. Sometimes those bubbles are directed at innocent people who just happen to be in the way at the moment. The bubbles don't all pop at the same time. Some take longer. Some are larger. Some are smaller. Out of necessity, though, they must pop.
Sometimes, we are on the "hot griddle" of life because we need some discipline from God. At times, that can make us angry, resentful, and bitter as well. But God is still looking down on us tenderly, watching to see how we are doing — knowing that it is for our own good.
God watches carefully to see when all the "bubbles" have popped out of our lives. He tends to us lovingly, and when the time is right, He flips us over to "heal" the soft, tender, oozing side. That's when we swell and grow — knowing how much Jesus Christ loves us. We rise, rejoicing because He has healed us from the hurt and pain, or because we are through the discipline that He sent our way.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, life is so painful at times. There are times we need to be disciplined. There are times painful things happen, over which we have no control. But You are watching. You see what is happening. You know when we need discipline. Thank You for that. Help us to trust You enough to know that You are in control and that there will be a quiet harvest of right living later on. Amen.
