Heading For Disaster

Lamentations 3:55-58 – I called on your name, O Lord, from the depths of the pit. You heard my plea: "Do not close your ears to my cry for relief." You came near when I called you and you said, "Do not fear." O Lord, you took up my case; you redeemed my life. (NIV)

Before my husband retired, he had occasion to attend several meetings at the company's head office in Europe. After the children were grown, I often travelled with him, taking a few days to do some sightseeing either before or after the meetings. On one of these trips, we took a side trip to Vienna, a city of romance and ornate concert halls, where several famous composers once played their music.

On our return from our extended tour, we were hustling through Schipol Airport and decided to hop on one of those moving sidewalks to save a few steps. Halfway along, I heard a commotion behind me. My curiosity was piqued, but I couldn't understand what they were saying, so I glanced around to see what all the excited chatter was about. Much to my horror, I discovered the chatter was meant to get my attention. My husband was lying flat on his back on the moving belt, and due to severe arthritis, he was too stiff to get up without help. Quickly my mind raced. Did I have the strength to get him up, or should I run ahead and push the panic button that would stop the belt? We were heading for disaster. Because I had heard his cry for help, I was able to get him on his feet before we arrived at the end of the moving sidewalk, thus avoiding the pending disaster.

At times, events in our lives may cause us to feel as helpless as my husband did when he rode along on his back on the moving belt in Schipol Airport. However, when we call for help, God has promised He will come to our aid.

Prayer: Dear God, thank You for the many times You have come to our aid when we have called upon Your name. Amen.
