The Dandelion's Message

Habakkuk 3:19 – The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to go on the heights. (NIV)

As I watched the north wind swirl around the corner of our house, gathering up snowflakes and heaping them into mountains of snow along our driveway, I sighed. Although it was only early December, we'd already had record amounts of snow, and if this kept up, the winter could be a long one.

Days later, after being cooped up in the house for a few days, I welcomed the moderating temperatures and went out for a walk. As I walked, I talked to God about how I was dreading another long winter. Suddenly a patch of yellow caught my attention. There at my feet, a dandelion pushed its way up through the earth. How totally out of place, yet how delightful: a reminder that winter will end. Spring will come again.

The flower also reminded me of the times when situations in my life left me feeling snowed under. Yet, every time I began to feel this way, the Lord has sent a reminder through His Word that this barren time will end.

Today if we are going through a period in our lives when circumstances seem beyond our control, a time when the storms of life seem to be swirling around us and we feel like we are in for a long siege, God wants to send us a message — a dandelion, if you will — to tell us that this barren time will end. Today's Scripture reminds us that the Lord is sovereign. He is our strength and He makes our feet like the feet of a deer. He enables us to go on the heights.

Prayer: Dear God, we want to thank You for sending us signs of Your love and protection during the more difficult times in our lives. Amen.
