1 Corinthians 10:13 – No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. (NIV)

Granddad was digging a cellar under an existing house. In years gone by, the best way was to use a horse-pulled scoop. This, of course, made a ramp under the house which was later filled in. My dad and his brothers were told to pick up the harvested vegetables and put them under the house. Wanting to save themselves some work, they loaded the old Essex (an early motorized vehicle) with the vegetables and drove under the house. "Pretty smart," they figured, until they discovered that they couldn't get the car out without the weight of the vegetables to keep it low.

God also provides us with a way of escape from our burdens and temptations. But sometimes we need these to keep us grounded, just as the Essex needed the weight to keep it down.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help us to accept the help that You offer with our cares and temptations, and to be grateful for the grounding which You provide through Your Word. Give us wisdom to avoid the temptation of taking short-cuts when You give us tasks for Your kingdom. We thank You, in Jesus' name. Amen.
