Comfy Shoes

Ephesians 6:15 – And having shod your feet in preparation (to face the enemy with the firm-footed stability, the promptness, and the readiness produced by the Good News) of the Gospel of peace. (AMP)

The dance floor was covered with a large variety of shoes. Of course they were all attached to people's legs! More experienced feet wore dark lace-up oxfords with support inserts, while younger toes sported three-inch heels, strappy sandals, and bright colours. (Let's not talk about what I was wearing!)

My high-heel days are past. Now I generally opt for comfort over high fashion. Still, fancy shoes attract lots of attention, even though they sometimes pinch a little and leave some long-term effects on the old tootsies.

When we first ask Jesus into our hearts, our new way of life is like those high style shoes. We stand out a little in the crowd. While we learn to walk in a Christ-like way, we get a little pinched, and yes, hopefully there will be some long-term effects as we learn about Christ.

However, we are often tempted to put on those comfy old loafers, to avoid the very things that attracted us to Jesus in the first place. Old habits, like comfortable old shoes, can drag us down if we aren't aware. We also face the danger of contentment with the status quo. There is always the temptation to become satisfied with achieving a level of maturity, such that we think we don't need to keep growing. We would be wise to check the fit of our spiritual life shoes regularly.

Prayer: Lord God, we confess that some areas of our lives have become too comfortable. We have become less visible as Your children. You have in mind change and growth for each of us, Lord. Revive us again. Nudge us out of our too comfortable ways and into shoes that pinch a little bit. Correct us where we need it. In Jesus' name. Amen.
