Sunshine

John 8:12 – Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." (ESV)

We have had a few cold snaps lately, in the lee of the Cotswold Hills. We had a heavy frost, which fell thickly onto the roofs and windows of the cars in our street.

I was later than I needed to be in the conditions the other day because I wanted to soak in a quick bit of Scripture before I left home. As I went to the street, the cars were heavily frosted, and I knew that it was going to take me a couple of minutes to clear the windows and get the engine running. However, on my arrival at my car, I was surprised to see that it was frost-free and ready to go.

It transpired that I had parked opposite a junction where there was a break in the line of houses. These houses had screened out the low winter sun on the cars. On my one car, though, there spilled brilliant sunshine, warming it through.

As I drove to work in good time, I reflected upon this act of serendipity. It had come hard on the heels of reading God's praises in the psalms that had warmed my heart and got me ready to face the day. I know that His light shines on me through His Word, just like the sunshine on the car.

We live cheek-by-jowl with our contemporaries, and the only difference may be that God's light shines on us. It is true that sometimes it does not feel like it, but this does not mean that its warmth is not there. Those who do not know the grace of salvation through Jesus live under a greater shadow. The light is there, but they are unable to feel its warmth because they are not in the right place to let it rest on them.

Prayer: Lord, we thank You that Your light shines on us daily. We invite You in to warm our souls, to remove the coldness of the times when we have ignored Your will and purpose for our lives. Enable us, by Your grace, to be ready to go where You would send us today. Amen.
