Isaiah 52:7 – How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, "Your God reigns!" (NIV)
I remember waking up one Sunday morning in December, and everything was quiet and still. No cars were heard outside, no buses were running, no people were making a noise. The sun was shining, but when I looked out of my bedroom window, I saw that the whole neighbourhood was covered in about a foot of snow.
Usually on Sunday mornings, I took a bus to church, but nothing was moving that day, so I decided to walk the six miles. I crunched through the snow and shivered in the cold, but it was a beautiful day, and I took my camera with me.
No-one was out. Even the Sunday newspapers were not being delivered. As I walked across the city, I took a whole series of photographs of churches covered in snow. The sky was an exceptional shade of light blue, and the churches were just beautiful. I felt deeply privileged to see everything looking so pure and holy, so white and gleaming.
When I eventually reached my own church, five other people were there. We had all walked from different parts of the city of Glasgow, experiencing the same sense of beauty and awe, reverence and peace. We sang Christmas carols and shared the gospel, we praised God for all the blessings we received, and we went home joyfully to a community that was just waking up and getting out as the snow began to melt.
The photographs turned out beautifully, and I have kept some of them in my old family Bible. They remind me of that special day, trudging through the snow, when my feet brought me to a place of good news, peace, and salvation.
Wherever we travel today, may our feet lead us to places of peace, churches full of cheer, and sanctuaries of salvation.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, You walked up and down Your own land to bring the gospel message to hearts and homes everywhere. Your journey of faith inspired other people, and throughout the years, they, in turn, took the same message of peace and salvation to the surrounding nations. As we walk through life, may we be inspired to become Your messengers, sharing Your good news and bringing good tidings of great joy. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
