Proverbs 16:9 – The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps. (ESV)
The other day, we were driving when an oncoming large red pickup truck pulled across the road, between us and the car in front, apparently not wanting to wait to find out if there was another car following.
As a result of previous experience gained from sailing, I knew that if a truck pulls across in front of you, then aim at the rear of the truck, so that by the time you get there it will have moved out of the way. Of course, unlike boats, trucks have brakes, and on this particular occasion, the driver hit his brakes so hard that he stopped dead.
My pressure on the brake pedal by this point had caused the wheels to lock up. Here we were, sliding towards this truck straddling the middle of the road. "Oh joy!" I thought. About then, I decided that it might be good to steer away from the truck. We were losing speed but not enough to avoid the imminent collision.
All that remained for me to do was to take my foot off the brake and allow the wheels, now on full lock, to start turning and grip the road. Thankfully, this they did, and without spinning around, we managed to turn a hard right and miss the truck, whose driver just drove off.
After pulling to the side of the road and checking that all of us were in a reasonable state of being, we drove on. My mouth, for some reason, had become dry!
I'd like to take the credit for not hitting the truck, but I know my thoughts were directed from above. God's protection and graciousness availed to keep us safe from harm and direct my actions — and not for the first time!
Prayer: We rejoice that You are the inaugurator of the laws of physics and that You gave us minds to sense Your will. We ask that You direct our paths both physically as well as spiritually, as we submit our travel and our lives to Your loving care today. Amen.
