The Still Small Voice

Friday, October 29, 2004

1 Kings 19:11b-12 – A great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake: and after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. (KJV)

The other day, a vehicle drove down our street, full of people. None was talking with the others. Instead, each person was having a "private" conversation on his cell phone!

Revelation 8:1 – When the Lamb opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. (NRSV)

What? For a solid thirty minutes? No cell phone ringing? No television blaring out commercials or off-colour sitcoms? No CD player moaning out off-key tones?

How will we stand it? Will we even be able to recognize silence when we hear it? If we don't even recognize quiet, how will we ever sense the voice of God? We have become afraid of silence. Is it because we are afraid of what we might hear?

Prayer: Lord, we want to hear from You. We expect You. But God, our ears are full of such clanging that our hearts can't even begin to grope for Your presence. Today, God, we want to purposely turn off the electronic age and choose the eternal. Give us courage to allow silence so that we can hear Your still small voice. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
