The Gravel Truck

James 4:7 – Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (NRSV)

I watched them jockey for position along the highway. The tractor-trailer driver needed to move to the centre lane because the bridges were too low where he was. However, the much smaller gravel truck just wouldn't move over. When the tractor-trailer driver sped up, the gravel truck driver did the same. Tractor-trailer man tried slowing down. Gravel driver copied.

After several minutes of this foolishness, the driver of the larger vehicle simply steered toward his desired goal. The smaller vehicle had to move or be squashed. He finally wised up, gave up, and moved over.

There are times on the road of life when Christians confront a similar problem. An obstacle appears, and though we make attempts to move around it, it remains in our way. We can either come to a dead stop in our tracks, or we can move in spite of the obstacle to the place where clearly we need to be, and trust that the obstacle will move.

At first glance, our obstacles can look impossible. We seem weak and puny by comparison. However, when we know Jesus as our personal Saviour, God gives us His grace so that we can stand up to any difficulty.

Satan is our gravel truck. He may look big and scary, but when we choose the right path, he can't stand in our way.

Prayer: Lord, we want to boast about our weaknesses so that Your power is clearly seen in us. When our problem seems to be immoveable, give us the courage to set our eyes on the goal and move forward on your chosen path for us. In Jesus' name. Amen.
