A Firm Foundation

Matthew 7:24-27 – Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash. (NIV)

Our neighbours have a lovely log house on the river. Unfortunately, they are situated in a spot where the river curves, and, over the past few years, a lot of erosion has taken place in the spring when the river runs quickly. Now the house is so close to the edge that they are going to have to build a retaining wall and hope that it will not fall.

This reminds me of the parable of the wise and foolish builders. The house that was built on the rock stood up against the rain and the wind, but the house that was built on sand fell. Jesus is the Rock, the firm foundation on Whom we must build our lives. When we do, when we live our lives according to His Word, we can stand up against the winds and the storms of this life that come our way.

Psalm 18:2 – The Lord is my Rock, my Fortress, and my Deliverer; my God, my keen and firm strength in Whom I will trust. (AMP)

How can we do this?

Here are a few ways:

  • Reading God's Word every day

  • Prayer

  • Bible study

  • Fellowship with other believers.

With God's Word as our foundation, we can build a godly life.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your faithfulness to us. May we always walk with You and seek to know You more and more. Thank You for Your Son, Jesus, the firm foundation, the Rock of our salvation. Help us to make wise decisions so that we can live lives that are pleasing to You. In Jesus' name. Amen.
