How We Tend To Forget

Ephesians 5:25b-27 – Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. (NIV)

It was a dull and rainy day, the kind of day that we tend to forget about on the sunny days of summer. After I had spent time in devotions, in having my coffee, and in watching the flickering flame in the fireplace, I did a few chores. Then I thought about something I had put off when the days were clear and bright.

I had hesitated to wash the sheer curtains in the dining room, wondering if I would ruin them simply by washing them and hanging them back on the rod to let them dry.

This, though, was the day to give it a try. There was no problem — and what a difference it made! Though the day remained dull, the clean sheers reflected a new light and tended to warm the room, giving a sense of newness. The sheers were clean — without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish.

As I looked at those pure, clean sheers, I was drawn to the Scripture speaking of the church of Jesus Christ that He cleanses by the washing of the Word and presents to Himself without stain or wrinkle, making it holy and blameless from sin by His own blood.

How we tend to forget our sin in the good times, only to have it drawn to our attention on dark days, like the one when I saw a need for cleaning my sheers.

Prayer: Dear Lord, maker of us all, we come to You and give thanks for the cleansing blood of Jesus, Who died on the cross for our sin. We come to You each day for continued cleansing, as we do sin in thought, in word, and in deed. Oh how we tend to forget! Continually help us to remember as we approach Your throne of grace. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
