Linebackers

Ephesians 5:15-16 – Be very careful, then, how you live — not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. (NIV)

One of my favourite people, Joe, was the linebacker coach for our football team. I never had paid much attention to that position until I got to know Joe.

Linebackers have a wide variety of responsibilities and need to be ready to react to many different offensive plays. The linebacker's job is to stop (tackle) any offensive player who is running with the ball, or he is to drop back on the field to be ready to cover any wide receivers that may be running downfield to catch a pass. The linebacker also needs to look for opportunities to intercept the ball.

In the same way, we need to be ready for opportunities to serve God, whether in sharing His Word through one-on-one visitation, or writing devotionals, or by declining to see an R-rated movie. It is important that we be aware that these chances could come to us as Christians at any time. In recognizing this fact, we should be careful in how we live. This includes making the right choices and making the most out of every opportunity God gives us!

Prayer: Lord, it is our desire to serve You. Father, keep us aware that we will receive chances to do this daily. Please don't let us miss out on lessons that You can teach us. Help us to make the right choices. Amen.
