The Strong Tower

Proverbs 18:10 – The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe. (NIV)

City laws in my hometown protect squirrels. Consequently, they multiply rapidly, and the trees, sidewalks, and, regretfully, the streets are full of them. Even though protected, many of them are killed on the streets. When confronted by a car, they are indecisive as to which way to run. They scamper back and forth in the path of danger, unable to decide where to go. This costs many of the little creatures their lives.

My heart goes out to the hapless squirrel as I watch it run to safety, then turn around, and dart back in front of the car in its confused state. I remember the times when I was confronted with danger, and how hard it was to make up my mind which way to run, until I found Christ and His Word.

Unlike the squirrel in the middle of the road with no guide, Christians have God's holy Word, the Bible, to direct the way we are to go. The Bible is the guidebook that gives us knowledge for daily living, the compass that points in the direction we are to take, the directory that gives us the name to call when we need a guide, and the map that shows us how to get to the place where we will find eternity when this life here is over. We know that the name of the Lord is a strong tower. If we live as He directs us, we can run to Him and find safety when danger approaches.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for Your Word, which tells us which way to go when we are confronted with danger. Grant us the wisdom to follow Your instructions. Amen.
