Who Me – Teach In Sunday School?

Exodus 4:10-12 – And Moses said to the Lord, O Lord, I am not eloquent or a man of words, neither before nor since You have spoken to Your servant; for I am slow of speech and have a heavy and awkward tongue. The Lord said unto him, Who has made man's mouth? Or who makes the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing or the blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth, and teach you what you shall say. (AMP)

I had been a Christian for a very short time when I was approached to become a Sunday School teacher. Having been raised in England during World War II, my knowledge of the Bible was very scanty, as all children's programmes within the church ceased during that time. I did not even know the event of Noah building the ark, which today is known by most kindergarten students. However, the church to which I was affiliated firmly believed that "whom God calls He also will equip", and with that understanding, I accepted the challenge. I very carefully learned each lesson, and, as my knowledge increased together with my faith, I would then present the lesson to the little children.

As God knows our every need, He was very much aware that I needed an in-depth knowledge of the sacrificial ministry of His Son, Christ Jesus. At that time, the minister decided to present an extensive series of lessons for the Sunday morning services on the tabernacle in the wilderness. So I began with the biblical "kindergarten students", the Israelites, in that wonderful object lesson, the tabernacle in the wilderness. It was thrilling!

Down through the years, my interest in the youth ministry of the church and my desire to acquire biblical knowledge have been a dual ongoing quest in my life, for which I thank God. I also thank God for the person who approached me to accept the responsibility of teaching. When we are asked to participate in the church programme, regardless of how unprepared we are, may God help us to accept the challenge.

Prayer: Gracious Father, we know that You will be there to help us through every phase of the tasks that You give us. Thank You, also, for the wonderful blessings and rewards which You give to us when we have the courage to say, "Yes". We enter Your presence in the authority of Your Son, Christ Jesus. Amen.
