Psalm 17:8 – Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings. (KJV)
My husband and I decided that we would like to take the Gospel message of love up the West Coast of Canada. The opportunity came when we purchased a sixty-five-foot boat with a business, which serviced all the small stores along the inside passage of the West Coast to the Alaska Panhandle. We loaded two tons of samples on board, which represented eighteen wholesale houses, mailing the orders back to Vancouver to be forwarded by freight ships.
By late fall, our year was completed, and it was necessary for my husband to go out of town to fulfil a business opportunity. We were tied up at a Vancouver marina, and instead of staying on board alone, it had been arranged for me to stay with friends. Waiting at the wharf of the marina for my friends to pick me up, I was enjoying my surroundings. The movement of the lights attached to the floats made the shadows come alive; the gentle lapping of the waves together with the boats softly bumping the floats filled the night with sound. Then I became aware that I was not the only one sharing the night scene. Looking at the darkened marina office doorway, I noticed the glow of a cigarette. The Cigarette Smoker must have sensed that I was aware of his presence because he walked toward me, but I do not remember being afraid. We became engaged in conversation. I remember that we talked about the various missions on the Skid Row of Vancouver. Then my friends arrived.
The next day, the Cigarette Smoker was arrested for trying to steal outboard motors. This was not exactly the right kind of friendship to cultivate in such a lonely place where a disposal facility was lapping at our feet. Although this happened many years ago, every detail of this experience is ingrained upon my mind. Perhaps the most important aspect is that God is very much aware of our need. We may not even be aware of the danger, but He is, and He is ready and available to take care of us. What a wonderful God!
Prayer: Heavenly Father, we thank You for the wonderful security found under the shadow of Your wings. We thank You that because You are an omnipresent God Who is in all places at all times, we are never without the protection of Your wings. We come to You today with praise and thanksgiving for who You are, through the authority of Your Son, Christ Jesus. Amen.
