Finding Rest

Tuesday, August 10, 2004

When I return from the grocery store, I always try to carry all the groceries into the house with as few trips as possible. Thus the heavy sacks weigh down upon my shoulder muscles, and cause my arms, shoulders, and back to ache.

Likewise, when I work outdoors in my yard, I try to do as much as I can while the sun is shining. Consequently, I am usually very tired at the end of the day, and my body lets me know in every aching muscle.

It is then that I want nothing more than a cup of hot tea to soothe my weariness. However, as I take my cup of steaming tea onto the deck to enjoy the view of Signal Hill here in St. John's, my weariness reminds me that there is One to whom I can take it.

Matthew 11:28-29 – Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. (NRSV)

The rest Christ offers is much more than mere physical relaxation. The rest which Jesus offers lifts the heaviness and burdened feeling from our souls, replacing it with a deep sense of well-being.

Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, take from us our sense of being burdened and weighed down with care. Enable us to find our rest in You. Amen.
