John 14:23-24 – Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father's who sent Me." (NKJV)
Yesterday, I decided to take Monet, my dog, down to Mundy Pond for a walk around the pond. He loves his walks. Well, I only had to say, "Walk?" once for him to perk up and jump to his feet, tail and body wagging furiously, as he yapped his assent to the suggestion. Monet dearly loves his walks. On the other hand, when I said, "Bath?" Monet was nowhere to be found. Eventually I discovered him cowering away in a corner under a table. Monet does not like a bath. Nor does he like to be groomed, which for him is essential since he has a long coat. The minute he spies the brush, we play the "catch me if you can" game. Monet does not like to be brushed.
Isn't it amazing that our pets listen so attentively and respond so willingly when what we ask of them is something that they like to do! Our children are not too different either, nor are we.
When it comes to being obedient to our "Master" and Lord Jesus Christ, don't we tend to weigh the task? When it is something we just love to do, we're right there, but if we are asked by Christ to do something which we are not so keen on doing, or which will require sacrifice, then what is our response? Are we quite as willing?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, when we consider all that You have done for us, how You moved from heaven to earth to open the way for us into Your presence, we are utterly in awe. Therefore we place our lives and our hearts in Your care, trusting You with them. Enable us now to live obediently for You. Amen.
