Luke 10:42 – But only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her. (NIV)
I have a friend, much like Martha, with whom I entertain occasionally. She is one of the most capable people I've ever known. Her house is spotless; she's a wonderful cook and an excellent hostess. I've never known her to entertain short of perfection, yet she always worries about all the things that could go wrong. Like Martha, she feels that things are not going according to schedule. She wants me to share her anxiety by double-checking all the things that she's already done. During these last minutes before the guests arrive, I think of Jesus' words to Martha:
Luke 10:41 – "Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things." (NIV)
Many of us are like Martha. We become frustrated with the demands of life or with the last minute details, and do not know which way to turn. Then, like Martha, we want to blame our problems on others, or at least have them share with us. A few minutes spent at Jesus' feet can make a difference. Mary had learned this. She knew that the few minutes that she spent at Jesus' feet gathering spiritual food would help her through the rest of her day.
Prayer: Lord, slow us down, so that, unlike Martha, we will not be frustrated with our many activities. Show us the value in sitting and listening! Amen.
