Up, Up And Away

John 8:34,36 – Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." (NIV)

Suddenly, we heard the whooshing sound of air blowing into the colourful array of hot-air balloons stretched across the grass. The ropes that had been holding them to the ground were released, and the crowd clapped and waved as, one by one, the balloons rose higher and higher into the evening sky. I was attending my first balloon festival in my newly-adopted home of Sussex, New Brunswick, Canada. In a lazy fashion, the giant balloons gained altitude and drifted slowly towards the setting sun on the distant horizon.

"The hardest part is getting off the ground," one pilot said to his passengers. "But when you're free, you're really free." His comment reminded me of today's Scripture, in which we are reminded that when the Son of God, Christ Jesus, sets us free, "we are free indeed".

Jesus came to earth to reunite us into God's family. He paid the penalty for our sin when He died on the cross in our place. Today, He offers us freedom from the weight and guilt of our broken fellowship with God. All we have to do is accept His gift of salvation. Truly, when we experience His freedom, we are free indeed.

Prayer: Jesus, thank You for the freedom we have in You. Amen.
