Night Lights

2 Corinthians 4:6-7 – For it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. (NRSV)

I couldn't turn that light off — no matter how hard I tried. My hostess had turned on the guest room lights, and then slipped off to bed. I didn't want to wake her, and I didn't want to admit that I couldn't find the off switch! I wanted to sleep, but that light continued to beam into my face. There was no escaping it. In desperation, I finally spent the night with the covers over my head.

We are called to be that kind of night light — that is, the kind without an off button, the kind that shines out a path for people in the dark places of life. Jesus Christ waits to beam forth from our every word, our every action, and our every life situation. When we shine with His gentle grace, people will want to join us in His light.

Prayer: Father God, don't let us ever be the off switch to our night light. Give us the courage to walk with the light of Jesus Christ turned on in our lives. We want to shine Your glory out into the world. In Jesus' name. Amen.
