How Do We Measure Wealth?

Matthew 6:21 – For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (NIV)

In a conversation, I mentioned a trip that I was intending to take, and the response was, "You must be wealthy!" I thought about this, and asked myself, how do we measure wealth? Is it all to do with money?

I think back to when I was a teenager, having my first paid job, and the time when I went out and purchased a pink and white car coat. My mother couldn't believe the colour. "Why did you choose such a perishable colour that would be in the cleaners all the time?" I had a simple answer: I was tired of always being restricted to having a grey coat that didn't show the dirt.

Although I splurged on that coat, money never seemed to be the top priority in our lives. I believe that our real wealth came out of the love we had for one another, for family, and for our spiritual life. We practiced what had been handed down to us, and we worked together to be a part of God's family.

Another big part of our life was being blessed and being able to share some of what we had monetarily and spiritually, and it has continued to be so. Yes, we had our share of problems, as we all do. But many years later, I still think back to that pink and white car coat. I took extra care of it to keep it clean, and it taught me both the value of money spent wisely and the true value of a spiritual life that is kept clean and free from sin.

Think of it! We can all get to share, if not money, just the wealth of giving our love, our heart, and our Spirit-driven lives with one another. We can seek our values, weigh them out carefully, and not let the dirt of sin get in our way. Our wealth is in how we value our love for God.

Prayer: Dear Lord, may we all be blessed in what counts the most in our lives. May we seek to grow wealthy in our spiritual lives, loving You, our God, and caring for others, using both our money and our gifts in giving and sharing. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
