Rusty Hearts

Jeremiah 24:7 – I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the Lord. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart. (NIV)

Many people refer to retirement as "the golden years". Lately, in our house, they seem more like rust! Whole sections of our bodies are wearing out and even being recalled. For instance, my husband is waiting for a hip replacement. We are told that the new stainless steel one (no rust expected here!) will cause much less pain than the one he's had for many years! Simple exercises will keep that new hip operating smoothly.

Long before medical doctors started replacing body parts, God saw the need for all of mankind to have a new heart. A bloodless surgery on our part, it required blood sacrifice on His part. His Son, Jesus Christ, the only sinless sacrifice available, hung on a cross to pay the price for our new hearts.

Unfortunately, these hearts are not made of stainless steel. Lack of exercise forms a type of rust called sin. We must keep in close touch with the Surgeon and exercise daily to prevent decay.

Prayer: Lord, we humble ourselves before You today. Tell us, really, truly: God, how are things between us? Please point out any rust spots and show us what to do to scrub them back to Your original finish. For the sake Your Son, Jesus, who died for our new hearts, we pray. Amen.
