2 Samuel 22:29 – You are my lamp, O Lord; the Lord turns my darkness into light. (NIV)

When I was very young, perhaps pre-school age, I remember my father sitting in our humble living room in a straight-backed chair and singing. When Dad sang, he sang with all his might. He especially loved the songs of the church, and when he was in the mood to sing, even those passing by our window would be treated to his high tenor voice.

Today I scribbled these words in my writer's "pig pen": "Without rain, there would be no rainbows. Without the dark, I couldn't see light, and without tears I wouldn't know joy." The words were penned during a time in my life when my world felt like it was squeezing in on me. But as I prayed, God brought the words of my Dad's favourite song to my mind:

When thou walkest by the way I'll lead thee. …
I will make the darkness light before thee.
      (Charles P. Jones)

Although we may feel alone and lost in the dark, God will light our way. When we shed our tears, He shines His light on them, and turns them into rainbows.

Prayer: Dear God, thank You for turning our darkness into light. Amen.
