Psalm 51:10-13 – Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will turn back to you. (NIV)
My cordless phone sits cradled on a charger close at hand. I use it all the time. The other day, I picked it up, and there was nothing — no dial tone — the phone was silent. I thought at first that it had been used too much without setting it back in the cradle to re-energize it.
I let it charge for a day or two, but when I picked it up once more, I noted that the red light was not on to show that it was charging.
I checked the wall plug, which was fine, as was the telephone jack. Then, just by chance, I noticed a small cord dangling in front of me, the cord that attaches into the back of the cradle charger. How it got unplugged I have no idea, but when I plugged it in, the red light came on to indicate that the phone was charging. In a day, the phone was back in business.
Just as I need my cordless phone to be able to communicate with others, so the chief purpose of our Christian faith is to have a vibrant connection, a relationship, with God.
Sometimes we Christians become unplugged from our source of spiritual power, and our recharger isn't working to energize our inner being to be productive for the Lord. We need to check all our connections and make certain nothing has become detached from our source of power for living the life of faith, the Holy Spirit.
One of our greatest sources is the Bible, God's Word. We need to remember to come back to that source for a recharge, because God can speak to us when we're plugged in to that. We also need to be plugged in to prayer, for then we can have fellowship with God, speaking and listening. We must remember to allow ourselves time away to be in God's presence alone, to renew and refresh our inner being. We also need Christian fellowship to energize our spirit, so that we are equipped to tell others about God's wondrous love.
Prayer: Dear Lord, renew within us Your Spirit, that we may be recharged and refreshed, in order to be creative in all we do for each other, for You, and for those who do not yet know You. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
