Song of Solomon 1:4b – We rejoice and delight in you; we will praise your love more than wine. How right they are to adore you! (NIV)
My mother tried everything she could think of to encourage her youngest grandson to eat his supper. The two boys were visiting for the first time without their parents, and she wanted their mealtime to be a happy experience. However, no matter what she put on the two-year-old's plate, the little fellow fussed and refused to eat.
The four-year-old was having no such problem. The children had been at the beach all afternoon, and he was hungry. He, too, tried to encourage his brother to eat, but, when his brother continued to fuss, he gave up. Heaving a big sigh, he said to his grandmother, "Grandma, just adore him. That's what Mom does when he's fussy."
When my mother shared with me the story of her grandsons' visit, I thought, "How like our loving God." His love is constant, and, when we were the most unlovable, He loved us enough to send His only Son to die for our sin.
Prayer: God, sometimes, thinking only of our own wants, we behave like fussy children. Forgive us when we are hard to please, and when we complain. Remind us that we will never be ignored, for we are adored. Amen.
