Job 38:19 – Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof? (KJV)
Psalm 36:9 – For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light. (KJV)
2 Corinthians 4:6 – For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. (KJV)
Three brilliant, beautiful stained glass windows adorn the wall above the altar at the little church where we meet for Contemplative Prayer. Carefully crafted, the centre window holds Jesus at the door, knocking, lamp in hand. Facing the altar, the window to the left of center displays the Virgin Mary, with St. Paul on the right.
For years, I had attended the noon-hour prayer meetings, and marvelled at the magnificence of the craftsmanship and colours, as sunlight radiated these images throughout the little church, sending with them some sense of serenity.
Though I'd also attended other types of evening services through the years, I guess that the bustle of activity and the brightness of candles and artificial lights masked what hit me the first time I attended prayer services at night.
With only three of us, a dim light, and a candle amid the pitch-blackness of a winter's night, there was no backlight to enhance the windows. They were merely three stone-cold, stark, black outlines, with no life or light at all.
It provided a profound statement as to how cold, dark, and lifeless are our lives when we are not "backlit" by the light of God's love. We're just forms — that's all — unable to radiate His light, life, and love to others.
Psalm 43:3 – O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles. (KJV)
Prayer: May we open our hearts to be led by You, O Lord, that Your light will so shine through us as to light a path for others. In Your name we pray. Amen.
