Lost In The Darkness

1 John 1:6-7 – If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. (NIV)

Our driveway and carport are lined with motion-sensor lights that come on when something moves in front of them. My four-year-old grandson was riding his tricycle late one evening. As he rode out from in front of the sensor lights, suddenly he found himself in total darkness. He screamed in terror for me. "Mema, it's dark, and I'm afraid!"

I explained to him that he must stay in a certain area in front of the lights for them to illuminate his tricycle path.

Walking in the light of our fellowship with God is like that. If we stay in the area that God has designated for us, He will light our way, and we can walk in the light of His love. Once we move from the area that He has chosen, we lose His light, and walk in total darkness.

This darkness may be self-centeredness, injustice, unrighteousness, anger, bigotry, jealousy, or any other sin. In our darkness, there is no light.

We must stay in the area of God's light if we are to escape the darkness.

Prayer: Father, through Your Son, You have prepared a way for us that leads to perfect light. May we avoid the darkness of our sins and walk in Your light. Amen.
