Hebrews 6:19 – We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. (NIV)
There is one place I don't want to be in a north-easterly gale, and that is on the water. Not long ago, one of these storms brought high winds, up to 72 centimetres of snow, and winter havoc to the province where I live. One area that was hit particularly hard was the island of Grand Manan where my parents live. The day after the storm, I called my father, and he told me that they almost lost their ferry, the islanders' only link to the mainland.
In the night, the winds were clocked at 96 kilometres per hour, and the winch holding the lines from the ferry to the dock was ripped out of the deck. Without the lines to hold the ship to the wharf, the ferry was left at the mercy of the storm, and it was buffeted about like a cowboy on a wild bucking bronco. Within minutes the ferry was being driven towards the rocks on Stanley Beach. Both the ferry and five crew members' lives were in peril. Sliding across the slippery decks, the crew managed to drop anchor and ride out the storm until daylight, at which time, with great skill, they managed to bring the ship back to dock.
Sometimes we are buffeted about by the storms of life. If we are to be successful in riding out the storms, we need to have our faith anchored securely in Jesus Christ, the only one who is able to hold us fast and bring us to safety.
Prayer Dear God, today some of us are facing trials that seem insurmountable. We are torn apart, and feel like we are heading for destruction. Help us to know that, when we are anchored in You, we have nothing to fear, for You will bring us safely through the storm. Amen.
