Romans 8:6 – The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace. (NIV)
Philippians 4:6-7 – Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (NIV)
A friend and I were having a cup of coffee together, in an attempt to get our day moving. I remarked that I had no energy, and was hoping that the caffeine would give me a boost to start the day.
"You need vitamins," said my friend, a health food enthusiast. She started naming several I might need.
She was overflowing with energy. She had jumped up three times while we drank coffee to clean a spot off some area in the kitchen. "I clean all day, and still I find dirty spots," she said. "It's driving me insane. I try so hard to keep my house spotless."
"You probably need to leave off some of your vitamins," I said. "You have too much energy."
"Yes," she admitted. "I'm too hyper."
"We need heart surgery," I said. "We need to let the Spirit of God come into our hearts, cleanse them, and fill them to overflowing with His love, grace, and peace. This would be a better solution for us than vitamins. It would perk me up and calm you down."
1 Peter 5:7 – Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. (NIV)
We try many things before we finally turn to Jesus, and give Him our anxieties. Once we give them to Him, He may guide us toward the vitamins if they are needed. He cares about our physical health also. He just wants us to turn to Him first.
Prayer: Lord, we, Your children have many needs — lack of energy, too much energy, anxiety, depression — but You have told us to cast all of our anxieties on You, because You care for us. Help us at our point of need, that we may find peace. Amen.
