The Tree

Genesis 2:9 – And the Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground — trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. (NIV)

Journeying in different parts of the world, one can look in awe at many different kinds of trees. Out on the west coast of North America grow the great California redwoods — trees that have been there for hundreds of years.

Journeying on into Israel to the Garden of Gethsemane, there are olive trees that are huge. I am told that they are at least two thousand years old.

We can see the great heights of the pines and the tremendous girth of the olive trees. We can turn back in our Bibles to the story of the Garden of Eden, and read how God created these trees for us to use, and to see their beauty upon this earth.

Let us ponder these trees, and the wonders they provide for us. The tree provides shelter in the forest as it stands. When it is cut down, it can also provide food, fuel, paper, building materials, medicine, and more. What an amazing thing, the tree!

Like the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the Garden of Eden, God took another tree and set it apart for a special reason. He used the tree for our Saviour Jesus Christ to hang upon. With this tree, He gave us the greatest gift of all: our salvation, freedom from sin and death, life eternal.

1 Peter 2:24a – He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness. (NIV)

Prayer: O Lord of all creation, we thank You for the tree, and all its beauty to see and feed upon. Thank You for Your Son who made the supreme sacrifice upon the tree for our salvation. In His precious name, we give You all the praise and glory that He died for us. Amen.
