Not To Stay

Ruth 1:1a – Now it came to pass…
1 Samuel 1:12a – And it came to pass…
Luke 11:27a – And it came to pass…
Acts 14:1a – And it came to pass… (all KJV)

The snow just won't quit this year. The drifts in our little town are as high as an elephant's eye. Since we are retired, we can plan our days according to the weather. Still, some are bound by work and school schedules.

One day, with the weather particularly bad, I called my daughter, who lives about twenty minutes away, to suggest she might consider keeping everyone home.

"Mom," she laughed, "the sun is shining here, and the weather is fine!"

I was so corralled by my weather situation that I couldn't even visualize that it might be totally clear a short journey ahead.

Sometimes we get bogged down in the weather of our spiritual life, too. The road may be hard or lonely, dark or stormy, and we falter in the midst of it. Too bad we have missed this little phrase in the Bible: "It came to pass." It came to pass — not to stay! Just a few feet ahead, just a day or two yonder, there is a bright clear change coming near.

Prayer: Father God, faithful One, so unchanging! Ever-present God, thanks for being with us in the storms of life. Forgive us for the times when we have lost sight of Your constant presence. Thanks for telling us, over and over, that our problems are not forever. They came to pass, and in their midst, forever with us, You are there. In the blessed name of Jesus. Amen.
