Studying God's Word

Thursday, March 27, 2003

Isaiah 40:8 – The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever. (NIV)

2 Timothy 3:16-17 – All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be equipped for every good work. (NIV)

James 1:22 – Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. (NIV)

We have recently moved to a new community, and, a few weeks ago, I received a phone call from one of the ladies at the church we have begun to attend, inviting me to their ladies' Bible study. Although I have participated in, and even led, several Bible studies over the years, I haven't been involved in many Bible studies recently. After only two weeks, I am realizing how much I've missed such a study, and how very important it is to attend one, if we are to live our Christian lives in a way that is pleasing to God.

This Bible study was no coincidence. I know that this is exactly where God wants me to be at this time, and I'm truly thankful that my new friend listened to God's prompting, and made that phone call. It seems that everything I read these days is related to the study we are doing — as if God is reinforcing what I'm learning, making sure that I get the message!

I once read these words and made a note of them inside the front of my Bible:

    Study the Bible to be wise;
    Believe it to be safe;
    Practice it to be holy.

If we want to know God, we have to know the Word. God reveals His truth to us in His Word, and God reveals Himself and His plan for our lives in His Word. God knows everything we need, and everything we need to know, to become the people He created us to be. As we read and study His Word, and share with other believers, our faith is strengthened, and we become more and more like Him.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your Word that teaches us the way we should live our lives. Help us to read Your Word every day, and to pay attention when You speak to us, so that our lives will be pleasing to You, and so that You will be glorified in all that we say and do. Transform our minds and hearts so that we can faithfully follow You all the days of our lives. In Jesus' name. Amen.
