Ephesians 2:4b-5 – God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions — it is by grace you have been saved. (NIV)
I try to stay in shape, so I lift weights several times a week. When I was young, I did this to improve my body; now it has become a necessity.
People may lift these dumbbells to get stronger. One really doesn't get stronger by lifting them once, but rather by following a routine. I know some strong athletes who became strong by lifting these weights thousands of times.
However, the greatest increase of strength I ever received came from one lift — and I did not make the lift. This strength came when Jesus, in love, lifted me from my sin.
Lifting weights is good. We should all exercise. But by far the most beneficial exercise we ever do will be on the day we stand and step forward to accept Jesus Christ as our Saviour.
The Chinese say that a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. When we take one step and put our trust in Jesus, we begin a wonderful journey that will last through eternity.
Prayer: Father, give us the courage to take that step and put our trust in Jesus. Guide us to repentance, forgiveness of our sins, and acceptance of Jesus Christ as our Saviour and the Lord of our lives. Amen.
