John 6:27 – Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed. (KJV)

Colossians 3:23 – Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men. (NASB)

I enjoy watching mystery programs on television. I especially love episodes in which a detective goes undercover. It's fascinating that a detective can pretend to be an executive or a waiter or someone else, in order to secretly fulfill another mission. The detective has two jobs, and the undercover job is the more important of the two — the "real" job.

This got me to thinking about my own job. I do have certain tasks and responsibilities that I must complete, but my real Boss is Jesus. Although my workmates know that I'm a Christian, they probably don't realize that I pray for them, or that my real purpose is to be a light reflecting God's love in a murky place. Somehow, knowing that I am "undercover" puts my bread-and-butter job in proper perspective. The work I do in my profession is just a medium for a greater purpose, and my true income, what I need to sustain myself, is assured by my "real" employer, the God of heaven and earth!

Of course, the analogy of going "undercover" as a Christian only covers the part about having a greater responsibility to God. It does not mean that we should hide our "true identity" as a Christian, nor does it mean slinking around and spying and gathering incriminating evidence against co-workers, but quite the opposite. It means becoming familiar with the subjects assigned to me. It means loving my co-workers and drawing them nearer to my Boss, so He can be their Boss too. And what a wonderful Boss He is!

Prayer: Father, thank You for giving meaning to our work. Please help us to be faithful in sharing Your loving kindness with our workmates. Amen.
