1 Samuel 12:22 – For the Lord will not cast away his people for his great name's sake. (NRSV)
It was time to have my hearing tested. While I waited at the doctor's office for my appointment, around me, I observed fellow geriatrics with walkers and canes. A lady with a hearing aid smiled from her chair to everyone. An elderly fellow sat quietly as if in another world. Others carried on conversations with each other, and one of them carried on a conversation with herself. Someone was surely in prayer.
As I sat and watched my fellow senior citizens, I discovered that they have an "honesty" about them. The soft lines on the faces tell of learned loneliness, and the weary brow rises to God's promise "that neither death or life, nor powers nor things present nor to come, shall separate us from the love of God." (Romans 8:38-39)
Silently I prayed that God would bless each one. God alone knows each need. I thought of the words, "Cast me not off in my old age; as my strength fails, forsake me not." (Psalm 71:9)
We can be assured of God's presence. Growing old is not the end. There is more, for our souls return to our maker, and we shall be with the Lord forever.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, we ask that you would bless all senior citizens. We thank you that we are not alone, and that you have promised a heavenly home for those who believe in you. Amen.
