John 3:16 – For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (NIV)

When I was a child, my father and I always said a Bible verse at night before I went to sleep. His favourite verse was John 3:16. After more than fifty years of Bible study, church going, teaching, and searching for a definition of God, I have found no better one than God is love.

Through study of his Word, we see many different facets of love. During the Advent season we also experience many different forms of his love. People are often more loving and caring during the Advent season; they are more generous with their gifts and more joyful.

People are eager to give gifts at Christmas time. This is appropriate, for didn't God give us all a gift when he sent his Son into the world as a tiny baby to save us from our sins? What a gift this was!

In recent years, God sent a new baby into our family on Christmas Day. What joy it was to receive this new life and anticipate the future joys this life would bring. God could not have found a better kind of gift to give the world than a tiny baby. If great expectations are born with the birth of any child, how much greater the hope that was born that night in Bethlehem, with the birth of God's Son!

Prayer: Father, as we prepare our hearts for the coming of the Christ Child, help us remember that you loved the world enough to send your son to save us. As the Spirit of Christmas grows in our hearts, may we remember that you loved us enough to give the most valuable gift you possessed. Amen.
