Quarter Horses

Listen while you read: "All Creatures Of Our God And King"1 (Lyrics)

1 Corinthians 13:12 – We don't yet see things clearly. We're squinting in a fog, peering through a mist. But it won't be long before the weather clears and the sun shines bright! We'll see it all then, see it all as clearly as God sees us, knowing him directly, just as he knows us! (MSG)

Our congregation, Barrie Free Methodist Church, in Barrie, Ontario, Canada, is in the midst of building a new church. As a consequence, our services are being held at the local fairground building. Curling, walk-a-thons, and horse shows are all part of our Sunday mornings.

My six-year-old granddaughter, Lorisa, was curious about the quarter horse event. Her mommy explained that quarter horses are judged by their movements, their size, the straightness of their legs, and so on. She replied, "Mommy, how silly! Why do they show the quarters? Why don't they show the whole horse?"

Wouldn't we like to see "the whole horse" in our spiritual lives — the whole scope of God's plan! Oh, the questions we would like to ask God — but for the time being, we see our lives a "quarter horse" at a time. When the mist clears, we'll get the entire view.

1 Corinthians 13:11-12 – We don't yet see things clearly. We're squinting in a fog, peering through a mist. But it won't be long before the weather clears and the sun shines bright! We'll see it all then, see it all as clearly as God sees us, knowing him directly just as he knows us. (MSG)

Prayer – Lord, we don't know much about Your plan for our lives. Thanks for making clear the bit we do need to know. And especially, Lord, we give You thanks for Your wisdom in not showing all of it to us at once. Amen.
