Song In The Night

Psalm 42:8 – By day the Lord directs his love, at night his song is with me — a prayer to the God of my life. (NIV)

When my daughter was little, she often had nightmares. She would wake up screaming in terror. I was always near when this happened, to hold her briefly in my arms, and to reassure her that everything was as it should be. Sometimes, when it was especially hard for her to return to sleep, I'd sing to her softly. Soon she would quiet down and return to sleep. Next morning, she would not even remember these terrifying moments.

This is a reminder that God is with us in the darkness also. We, like my daughter, are not aware of the loving arms that surround us in the darkness, but they are there, just the same. During the day, when the sun is shining and its warmth penetrates our world, we can validate the presence of God in our lives, but He does not leave us when the day is done and the comforting presence seems to fade into the velvet darkness of night. He is still there with His "song in the night" to care for us until the light's comforting presence returns.

Psalm 19:4,6 – In the heavens He has pitched a tent for the sun. It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is hidden from its heat. (NIV)

Prayer: Lord, we thank you for the assurance that you are with us through the darkness as well as when the light shines warm and bright. May we listen carefully for your song in the night. Amen.
