1 Corinthians 1:27-28 – But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things — and the things that are not — to nullify the things that are. (NIV)

My childhood neighbourhood was situated across the street from a steel mill. Once I was old enough to realize I was poor, I wanted the things I didn't have. As an adult, I "got them", and lived among people who "had them". Yet, nobody in my new, "nicer" neighbourhood was happier than the people in my old neighbourhood, myself included.

We look for prominence in having the biggest house on the best block. Yet, the smallest house on any block has plenty of room to nurture great love within its walls.

We look for prestige in the number of titles after our name. Yet, the reputation of a solid name stands on its own two feet.

We look for position in the highest ranks. Yet, equal standing garners the greatest respect.

We look for entertainment in extravagant vacations, exciting excursions, big screen televisions, digital-quality games, and movies with bigger-than-life special effects. Yet, finding fulfillment in the blessing of an ordinary day is the consummate form of satisfaction.

We look for God in the embodiment of a loud and thunderous being. Yet, the still, small voice within directs us down the roads we were meant to travel.

We look in places that blind us to the things we truly seek, and wonder why we still have a deep, empty void in our hearts.

1 Kings 19:11-12 – The Lord said, "Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by." Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. (NIV)

Prayer: Dear heavenly Father, keep our eyes fixed and our hearts focused on the light of Christ Jesus, so that we are not so easily influenced by the things of this world. Help us not to forget that we are here for a short time and that everything we have and know here on earth will remain here when we're gone. Keep us walking ever upward to our eternal home. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
