Flyers… we find them in our mailboxes, nailed on utility poles, taped onto store windows, distributed by hand, and inserted into our weekly newspaper deliveries.
They are eye-catching. They are printed on bright, dazzling, coloured paper and are decorated to appeal to the eye — a sales pitch!
The other day, as I was sorting through the usual flyers, I came across two very different flyers that caught my attention. One flyer was very shiny, and was covered with pictures of various kinds of jewellery: 10 caret gold necklaces, 10 caret white gold floating heart pendants, earrings, cameos, pearl necklaces and matching earrings, gold bangles, and rings. It was obvious that the advertiser knew exactly how to make the ad more pleasing to the eye. It seemed to scream, "Buy now!" "Treat yourself!" and "You deserve it!"
The other one was a three-fold flyer with a matte finish, from an organization that offers help to the hungry and the homeless. But, unlike the other flyer, this one asked for generous donations, so that the advertiser could continue to offer its help.
Two very different flyers, with two very different views, were offering the unusual choice of whether to buy or to give.
Matthew 6:33 – But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you. (NASB)
I chose to give. What would you choose?
Prayer: Dear God, we are confronted with so many temptations in our daily life. Help us to make the proper choices that lead to seeking first the kingdom of God. Thank You. Amen.
