Psalm 23:1 – The Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want. (KJV)
As I turned the calendar page to June, I was reminded of Father's Day, and my thoughts turned to my own father and the many special moments we have shared. The memories prompted me to write a tribute to my loving father who had shared with his family so generously.
But then I was reminded of other families who unfortunately cannot honour their earthly fathers, for they haven't experienced such happy memories. Who can they turn to for an example of fatherly love? "To me," God reminded me, "their heavenly Father."
So I turned to God, and to the Scripture, where every thought and every attribute is rooted in Him. The Psalmist, especially, whose writings have stood the test of time, says it best.
Psalm 23
The Lord (my heavenly father) is my shepherd, I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil, for you are with me.
Your rod and your staff they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
In the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life,
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. (NIV)
Who can ask for more than the guidance, love, protection, shelter, and anointing that our God has promised us in His holy Word? On this Father's Day, we as Christians are invited to celebrate by taking time to honour our heavenly Father, for His love goes from everlasting to everlasting.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, so often we are like children who take Your love and provision for granted. Help us to take time to consider all You have done for us. Remind us to say "thank you." Amen.
