Matthew 6:5-6 – When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites! They love to stand up and pray in the houses of worship and on the street corners, so that everyone will see them. I assure you, they have already been paid in full. But when you pray, go to your room, close the door, and pray to your Father, who is unseen. (TEV)
I was visiting Sister Esther a while ago, and, in the conversation, I asked her how the day had gone for her daughter Annie who had just turned 23. Birthdays are a big thing here in Guyana.
Esther smiled, and said that they had had a quiet evening together and a special meal. What was the highlight of the day for this mother?
She smiled and said, "We gaff."
I'm getting better at "translating", and it didn't take but a moment to realize that the highlight of the day was just sitting with her daughter and talking.
On the way home the next day, someone commented about the cross I wear (the Cursillo Cross of The Presbyterian Church in Canada). I said I wore it to remind me of a special relationship I have with God in Christ. Around the outside of the cross is written, "Christ is counting on you".
"What's so special about your relationship with God?" I was asked.
"We gaff."
When we think of our relationship with God and the teaching of scripture, we realize how crucial it is to take time and just talk to God.
Prayer: Dear God,
- What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and grief to bear.
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer. Amen.
