Hosanna, Loud Hosanna

Mark 11:9 – The people who were in front and those who followed behind began to shout, "Praise God! God bless him who comes in the name of the Lord!" (GNB)

Each time I sing the familiar words of the hymn Hosanna, Loud Hosanna, I travel back many years to a time when I was asked to participate in a special Sunday School class. Our class appeared on a weekly radio program, Sunday School on the Air, heard on CJNB, a local station in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada.

I can remember studying my Sunday School lessons diligently so that I would not be stumped when I was asked a question. North Battleford was a small city at the time, and the audience was full of people we knew, including my Scottish Presbyterian grandmother. The show always opened with the singing of "Hosanna, loud hosanna, the little children sang; through pillared court and temple the lovely anthem rang."

Today is Palm Sunday and we will be singing various hymns and choruses during our worship services. Some adult leaders will form a processional with Sunday School children, and move down the centre aisle of the church waving palm branches high. May we each be taken back in time to the day when Jesus rode on a donkey with children and adults waving palm branches and loudly cheering "Hosanna!" May this experience serve to set our mind on the events that follow in this Holy Week.

Prayer: Lord, we come to praise you and sing "Hosanna!" today. Help us to focus on you and your journey to Calvary this week. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
