Micah 5:4-5 – When he comes, he will rule his people with the strength that comes from the Lord and with the majesty of the Lord God himself. His people will live in safety because people all over the earth will acknowledge his greatness, and he will bring peace. (GNB)
Recently, my children, aged 4 and 6, have begun to understand the concept of time. Bethany now realizes that time passes in an orderly fashion of minutes, hours, and days. We seldom use the common practice of 'three more sleeps,' 'two more sleeps,' 'one more sleep,' to mark special upcoming events.
However, 'time' is an ongoing lesson. Recently, Bethany asked her father, "Were you alive when there were dinosaurs?" 'A long time ago' has not yet been defined in her mind. Anything older than she is, constitutes ancient history to her.
Her next question was, "Were you alive when Baby Jesus was born?" Of course, to her young and literal mind, the answer was "no". And yet, we are all alive when Baby Jesus is born. Each year, we hear the stories, and live the message of Jesus' birth over again. He loves us, teaches us, and fills our hearts with joy every day.
This Christmas, as we hear the stories of Jesus' birth again, let's take a quiet moment and watch his birth in our hearts. It is so easy to pass through the season without really thinking about Jesus.
Will you be alive, really alive, when Jesus is born?
Prayer: Loving Father, it is so easy to pass through 'Christmas' without thinking of the miracle of Jesus' birth. Help us to slow down, so that each of us may be alive when Jesus is born. Amen.
