Matthew 7:7-8 – Ask, and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened unto you. For everyone who asks will receive, and anyone who seeks will find, and the door will be opened to him who knocks. (GNB)
It was perfect weather on Halloween night this year. Cold weather, rain, and/or wind often spoil the children's fun, but not this year. "Trick or treat" resounded from door to door. All who knocked or rang the doorbell received candy. I shut the door and turned off the lights at 9:00 p.m.
On Halloween night, many children knocked on the door or rang the doorbell, and I answered the door. I did not turn anyone away without candy. That night I was reminded of today's scripture text, from Matthew 7:7.
Jesus invites people to knock, and the door will be opened to them to receive eternal life. This is a precious gift, many times more valuable and longer-lasting than candy. Jesus offers eternal life — any hour of the day or any day of the week. Thankfully all we need to do is ask, and we shall receive eternal life.
Prayer: Loving God, we praise you for the gift of eternal life through your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
