Rainbow: Promise With Peace

Saturday, August 4, 2001

Genesis 9:13-15 – I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. (NIV)

Recently it was time for my six-month check-up with the dentist. To have this check-up I must travel many miles. Why? Because I have a hereditary gum condition that is very rare, and treatment for it is only experimental. Trips to the dentist for me are rarely pleasant and I tend to be very apprehensive of them.

This time was no different. I expected to feel a great deal of pain and to be a very long time with the dentist. Because of the distance I must travel to get this man's experience, he makes sure all that needs to be done is accomplished in a single trip.

The day was bright and the sun was shining all around us. However, on the horizon to the southeast there was a clump of dark, angry clouds. Suddenly, my husband said, "Mary, look!" Right across that angry cloud face was the most beautiful rainbow. Suddenly I had perfect peace. God had once more shown us his covenant promise, and I knew it would be all right.

We have a God who loves us and who understands our tensions and our fears, and it is amazing the way he often does things that give us rest and peace. Jesus promised that if we place our trust in God our burdens will ease and our load will be light.

As living proof that God is in his promises, I had the best dental check-up I have had in over five years. Instead of being with the dentist anywhere up to five or six hours, I had my teeth cleaned, my gum problem checked, and I was away in less than an hour. God gave us his promise on the road and he filled it to perfection. What a mighty God we serve!

Prayer: Lord, we thank you for the wonderful way you not only take our burdens on yourself but you show us visibly that you have taken them. We praise you. Continue to walk with us and show us your way. In Jesus' precious name. Amen.
