Just Checking

Psalm 54:4 – Behold, God is mine helper: the Lord is with them that uphold my soul. (KJV)

Was it the wind or the kids across the road having come home from a night of celebrating the last day of school? Something had ushered us out of our sleep in the wee small hours of the morning.

Perhaps it was the wind, for when it blows through the window, the noise of the shutters fluttering scares my dog and she hightails it downstairs. If it was the kids, it wasn't that they were loud, just that they were there, and their voices had carried across the way, slipping into our sleep, shifting us into wakefulness.

Once awake, dogs being what they are, mine wanted out, so I donned some clothes and walked out into our yard. I was greeted by the cool kind of semi-summer breeze that only a four o'clock morning can offer — clear, crisp, clean and quiet, as if it belongs just to you — the kind that awakens one's senses, with the bonus of a star-studded sky. If we'd not been awakened, I'd have missed out on it completely.

Wide awake when we came back in, I decided to read the Daily devotional and send my reply before attempting to catch some more sleep.

The early time of my reply didn't go unnoticed, however, and later in the day, a reply to my reply queried my "rather different hours" — just checking, to make sure everything was okay.

God was my helper that night. I saw and inhaled beauty that I'd not experienced in a very long time, while someone had cared enough to "just check".

Today's scripture verse is perhaps the epitome of my "Daily" life, for God is my helper. It is He who provides all that inspires me. It is He who provides the words, written and spoken. And it He who is with those who encourage and support me, who "uphold my soul".

Prayer: O God, You are the giver of opportunities. Help us to be open to taking that "walk in the wind" when it is given to us. Remind us to linger long enough to look up and savour the stars You have set out in the sky; and be caressed by the cool breeze as it gently drifts on by. May we be ever mindful of You and those whom You put in our path to work in accordance with You. In Your name we pray. Amen.
