Genesis 9:16-17 – When the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between me and all living beings on earth. That is the sign of the promise which I am making to all living beings. (GNB)
We went to the city recently to run errands. It is always a chore, unbuckling the kids from their car seats, dragging them into the store to pick up what we need, then heading out to the car, buckling them back in and driving off to the next place. We make this trip once or twice a month to do all the things we can't do in our small town.
By the end of the day, we are exhausted and the kids are grumpy. After each stop, we start the countdown: just three more places, just two more places….
This particular day, there had been several thunderstorms rolling through as well. By suppertime, we were all tired and soggy. As we were driving to yet another store, we noticed a storm passing just to the south. It was pitch black, and streaks of lightning forked across the sky, but the storm produced only a few drops of rain in our area.
Then the clouds overhead parted and we saw the rainbow. We still catch our breath at the sight of a rainbow. It was very faint at first, then grew stronger. Soon its twin, a dim shadow, appeared to the right. It was a beautiful sight. We all strained our necks to get a better view out of the car windows. When we arrived at our destination, we took a few moments to appreciate the sight and praise God for His marvels.
I wondered how many others, speeding down the road, stopped for a moment to admire God's works in their glory. So often we are too busy to notice God. It takes only a moment to pause and praise Him. Seeing a rainbow helps us remember His promise and His love.
Prayer: Marvellous God, Your love is shown in many things around us. Often we forget to stop and say "Thank You." Show us all Your rainbows, not only after storms, but also in everyday life. Open our eyes, that we may see Your wonders in all things. Amen.
