Listen while you read: "The Master Hath Come"1 (Lyrics) |
Ephesians 1:6-8 – Let us praise God for his glorious grace, for the free gift he gave us in his dear Son! For by the death of Christ we are set free, that is, our sins are forgiven. How great is the grace of God, which he gave to us in such a large measure! (GNB)
We have all received many offers for free goods and services. They come in all shapes and sizes! How often is an evening meal interrupted by solicitors offering a free prize? All we have to do is send a credit card number, or pay a fee to cover shipping and handling costs.
Often there is a postcard in our mail proclaiming us the winners of a trip, TV, or painting. "Just 'phone this number to receive your free prize." Of course, first we have to listen to a high-pressure salesman give his pitch.
Some time ago, a gimmick offered by a salesman was to ring the doorbell, and wait with his hands behind his back. When one answered the door, he would ask "Have you heard about our product?" Upon receiving the answer "No", he would say "Fantastic", and offer his product with that same name. Once again, one had to listen to his promotion, to receive the free gift.
Of course, with the advent of e-mail, we are all bombarded with free offers. Free offers are everywhere — in the mall, on the street, over the 'phone, in our homes. But there is always a catch. There is no such thing as a free lunch. There is always a motive behind the free gift.
But there is one gift that is free. It is the gift of our Lord, Jesus Christ. He died for our sins. It isn't a gimmick. There is no catch, no hidden agenda. He gave His life freely, to save us. What better gift could there be?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, You sent Your Son to die for us. He gave His life freely, that we would know Your grace. Help us to accept this gift, as freely as it is given. In His name we pray. Amen.
